A Ghost Town Rebuilt After the War

Hillsborough began as an 1870s coal settlement that emptied out when the coal would not sell, and it stayed empty until the postwar rebuild put houses back on the ridge. The plumbing from that rebuild is now at the age where it fails.

Steel services from the rebuild

Many of the postwar houses fronting the road still run on the galvanised water lines they were built with, and the rust inside them shows up as brown water, dropping pressure or a damp patch at the wall entry.

Clay sewers in shifting ground

The earthenware drains from the redevelopment have spent decades shifting with the clay soil on the ridge, leaving joints out of line. With bush on all four boundaries, tree roots head straight for those gaps.

Rain off the catchment

Thunderstorms over the surrounding bush overload the few street drains along the strip, and low-side blocks cop the overflow through their yard gullies. At the last census, 641 residents lived across 239 dwellings, nearly all of them standalone houses on their own blocks.

The Work This Strip Calls For

Four hubs cover most of what Hillsborough households need, and the causes behind the calls are local:

Plumber collecting gear from the ute toolbox

Emergency plumbing

Perished flexi hoses, rusted steel services splitting at the wall, and old tanks in the postwar houses giving out on the coldest mornings.

Plumber feeding a drain camera into a pit at a commercial unit

Blocked drains

Roots at the out-of-line clay joints, silt washing down from the bush slopes, and storm flows overloading small private gullies.

Plumber finishing a continuous-flow gas hot water install

Hot water

Owners who have held their modest homes for a long time often run storage tanks years past their expected life, and replacement is frequently the honest answer.

Gas fitter checking an oven connection

Gas fitting

New cooktops and heaters, and gas connections that have been in the ground since the rebuild checked for leaks.

A job on Higham Road or a block near the dog showground gets the same discipline as anything in Cardiff itself: find the real cause, price it clearly, fix it once.

Questions From the Bush Strip

Do bushland roots cause most blocked drains here?

Most of them, yes. Bush wraps the homes on every side, and roots push into the out-of-line joints of the clay sewers laid during the 1950s and 60s rebuild, with silt off the slopes settling in behind them. After clearing, the camera shows whether a joint has pulled apart far enough to need relining.

Can an old steel water service be swapped out?

Yes. Plenty of postwar houses still run their original galvanised lines, and the tell-tales are rusty flow from the tap, fading pressure or a weep where the pipe meets the wall. We price the swap up front and fit modern pipe in its place.
