What Counts as an Emergency Right Now?

Not every fault qualifies, and knowing the difference saves you paying an after-hours rate for a job that could have held until morning.

  • A burst pipe or a split flexi hose spraying water
  • A sewer overflowing into a yard, shower or toilet
  • No water at all, or a tap you cannot turn off
  • A hot water unit gone dead, especially in winter
  • Gas you can smell (leave the house first, then ring)
  • A slow-draining sink with no overflow
  • A dripping tap or a running toilet cistern
  • A cold tap that works fine but runs lukewarm

If you are unsure, ring and describe it. We would rather tell you it can wait than have you mopping until dawn.

Why Older Streets Fail After Dark

This suburb grew up on railway and coal-mining work, and plenty of its 1940s-1960s fibro and weatherboard homes keep a good share of the pipes they were built with. Three faults cause the worst of the late-night damage:

Worn-out hot water units

Homes from the post-war and 1960s-1980s eras still run the units they were built with, or the first swap since, long past the service life the maker ever promised.

Old pipe letting go

Earthenware and galvanised lines under the mid-century housing crack and burst without ceremony, and the reactive clay soil keeps working at those joints with every season.

Reno-era braided hoses

Flexible hoses fitted during a kitchen or bathroom update years back age out quietly, then split behind a cabinet where nobody looks until the floor is wet.

And when Winding Creek floods. Heavy rain floods the low ground along the creek and drives the stormwater lines past their limit, so yards on the low side go under. The stormwater drains page covers that work.

Burst Pipe? What to Do Before We Arrive

Water from a burst does damage by the minute, so the first moves are yours. Take these three steps first, then ring.

  1. 01

Get the water off at the meter

Look for the meter box by the street edge of the block. If the burst is at one fixture, the isolation valve under that sink or on the heater's cold inlet may be quicker.

  2. 02

Cut the power to wet areas

Where water has reached outlets or appliances, turn those circuits off at the board, standing on dry ground only.

  3. 03

Move what you can and ring us

Lift rugs and anything soft clear of the water, then call (02) 4063 3469 with a quick rundown of the damage. The rest gets talked through on the phone while a plumber is dispatched.

Once on site, the plumber isolates the failed section, drains it down, and quotes the repair before cutting anything. A split flexi hose is usually swapped there and then. When a galvanised line bursts, the rest of that run is often close behind, so the quote covers the patch and a full replacement side by side.

Is a Sewer Overflow an Emergency?

The signs come in threes. A toilet that gurgles louder each flush, water rising in the shower while the machine drains, and a sour smell arriving with wet patches in the yard all point to a sewer backing up. It will not clear itself.

Roots are the usual driver on the older streets. Roots from the big backyard trees track along earthenware drains and slip into the cracked joints, and the line chokes slowly until a heavy load of water pushes it over. If that is your place, the blocked sewer page covers the clearing, and a CCTV drain inspection shows the pipe's condition before it fails at 2am.

From Your Ring to Water Stopped

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    Isolate, contain, repair

On an urgent call the flow is isolated and the mess contained before any repair begins, so the damage stops growing while you decide.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

The Price Side of an Urgent Call

We provide up-front, honest quotes that will always match the final price, should you decide to go ahead. An emergency gets its price before the repair, just like a booked job.

On an urgent job the clock matters most:

  • The hour Night and weekend visits cost more, and the rate is stated when you book.
  • Getting to the burst A pipe under the floor of a post-war cottage takes more labour to reach than a laundry tap.
  • Pipe type Old earthenware and galvanised lines take longer to patch than PVC.
  • Parts Valves, hoses and common unit spares travel on the van, and anything else is sourced before a price is set.

Honest About the Jobs We Hand On

When we're not the right call: a break in the public main or on the street side of the meter is repaired by the water authority, and we isolate your side while you report it. Anything needing an electrician's licence gets pointed to an electrician. And where a flood has already wrecked plaster or flooring, the insurance claim and the rebuild come first; we handle the plumbing.

What Customers Say

I commend them for their very fast and efficient service when we had a burst pipe.

Straight Answers on Urgent Calls

How quickly can a plumber get to a Cardiff emergency?

We are available 24/7, and the phone triage sorts the worst faults to the front of the queue. Ring, describe what is happening, and we step you through the safe first moves while a plumber is on the way.

What should I do about water pouring through the ceiling?

Turn the water off at the meter first, then switch off the circuits for any room the water has reached. That is the whole first-aid list. Ring us after that.

Do after-hours emergency calls cost more?

Yes. Nights and weekends carry a higher rate, quoted when you book so the invoice holds no surprises. Daytime visits get the same fixed figure before work begins.

Is a burst flexi hose really an emergency?

Yes. A braided hose that lets go under a laundry sink or behind a toilet can dump hundreds of litres in an hour, and they fail quietly in homes renovated years back. If one has split, shut the main and ring us.
