Which appliances need a licensed gas fitter?

Anything that draws gas needs a licensed gas fitter by law, and the connection has to be leak-tested and certified before the appliance runs. That includes:

  • Cooktops and wall ovens in kitchen renovations or replacements
  • BBQ points and outdoor line runs for patios and entertaining areas
  • Gas space heaters and gas log fires
  • Pool and spa heaters
  • Commercial kitchen appliances for cafes and food businesses

A connection made by anyone unlicensed leaves you with no compliance record if something goes wrong. The certificate handed over at the end is your proof the job was done properly.

How the install runs

  1. 01

    Ring or send the form

Call (02) 4063 3469 or use the form to explain the fault. We ask enough to bring the right equipment the first time.

  2. 02

    A fixed price first

A plumber inspects the job and names a fixed figure up front. Nothing gets started until you give the go-ahead.

  3. 03

    The connection

The gas fitter runs or checks the supply line, fits and brackets the appliance, leak-tests every joint and certifies the work before it lights.

  4. 04

    Covered for a year

Every job carries our 365-day warranty on all work. If something we did isn't right, ring the same number.

What drives the cost of a gas connection?

An install is priced on the appliance's appetite for gas first:

  • Gas load A pool heater draws far more than a cooktop, and the pipe size has to match it.
  • Distance A heater in a back bedroom sits further from the meter than a cooktop swap.
  • Old fittings Worn fittings on the existing line get swapped as part of the install.
  • Access Tight subfloors under the older cottages and closed-in wall cavities take longer to work through.

Why the housing here shapes the job

Townhouse kitchens

Brick-veneer houses and infill townhouses added in later decades tend to have compact kitchens, where routing a supply line to a new cooktop takes some planning.

Cottage gas lines

In the post-war fibro and weatherboard cottages, a kitchen or heating upgrade is often the first time the gas line has been opened in decades. It is checked at quote stage, so nothing surfaces after the cabinets go back on. The wider gas work sits on our gas fitting hub.

When We're Not the Right Call

  • An electrical fault in the appliance itself, or switchboard work needed before a gas heater can be certified, belongs to an electrician
  • A unit still inside the maker's warranty is often better handled through the manufacturer
  • A gas smell in the house is an urgent leak job, not an install: get everyone outside, leave the switches alone, and read our gas leak detection page

Gas appliance questions, answered

Can you run a gas point out to a patio BBQ?

Yes. The pipe is sized for the BBQ's burners, run neatly along the wall or under the eaves, and every joint is tested before the first flame. The whole job is quoted at one fixed price before work starts.

Do older Cardiff houses need new gas piping before a cooktop goes in?

Often, yes. Older homes here can still carry the fittings they were built with, and an old line may not suit a modern appliance or pass a current leak test. It is checked during the quote, and any upgrade is included in the one price.

Can you connect a second-hand gas appliance?

We can, but we inspect it first. An older appliance with worn hoses, a corroded regulator or an unclear history can be a safety risk, and if it fails the checks it stays disconnected, with the faults written down for you.

Does a new gas heater need anything before winter?

A connection and a leak test at install, and then a service check each season after that keeps it safe. If your heater has not been looked at in years, book an inspection before the first cold snap rather than the night you first switch it on.
